QPR ‘close to agreeing a deal for Wolves star’

first_imgQPR are close to agreeing a deal to sign Wolves winger Matt Jarvis, according to The People.Jarvis, 26, is keen to return to the Premier League and has apparently been spotted house-hunting in the west London area.Fulham are said to also be keen on the England international, but it is claimed they are not prepared to meet Wolves’ asking price. The paper suggests that Fulham have enquired about Wolves striker Steven Fletcher, but again are unwilling to pay the required transfer fee.The People also say Liverpool want to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham for £6m.The American is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield and it is claimed that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will table a formal bid for him.Swansea’s Scott Sinclair and Luciano Narsingh of Dutch club Heerenveen are touted as possible replacements for Dempsey, while Bristol City have apparently refused to give winger Albert Adomah permission to speak to Fulham.Meanwhile, Chelsea will an reject an offer from Aston Villa for left-back Ryan Bertrand, according to the Sunday Mirror. It is claimed that Villa manager Paul Lambert is keen to sign Bertrand either permanently or on a season-long loan, but Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo is believed to want him to stay at Stamford Bridge and sign a new contract. The People report that relegated Bolton want to sign Oriol Romeu on loan from Chelsea, while the Mail on Sunday say Chelsea are vying with Tottenham for the signature of £20m-rated Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski. And The Sun on Sunday say Chelsea have beaten off a host of Premier League rivals to sign 15-year-old George Brady – nephew of West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady – from French club AS Cannes. They are said to have paid £250,000 in compensation to land the 6ft 4in defender, who it is suggested was also wanted by Arsenal, Tottenham and both Manchester clubs. The Sun also have an interview with Frank Lampard, who denies speculation linking him with a move to LA Galaxy.“There’s nothing in that at all. The new air battle

first_imgFrequent-flyer programs and global airline alliances have become front-line weapons in the fight by the world’s oldest airlines to stave off unprecedented market disruption and price competition from new competitors.Despite predictions that ballooning contingent liabilities would kill off frequent flyer programs, they’re still going strong four decades after their invention and global alliances have cemented them at the heart of the relationship between airlines and their customers. The world’s oldest alliance, Oneworld, will this year celebrate its 20th birthday as the networks of frequent flyer programs it stitches together hold the line against new long-haul low-cost competitors and market disruptors like the three Persian Gulf-based hub-and-spoke carriers, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways.Of the three, only Qatar Airways belongs to an alliance (Oneworld): the other two, including the world’s biggest international carrier, Emirates, have declared their independence from alliances and instead have pursued bilateral relationships – like the Qantas-Emirates joint venture, which was launched in 2012, and this week’s co-operation agreement between Etihad and Lufthansa. Each of the three major alliances – Oneworld, Star and Sky Team – carries 550-650 million passengers a year, in total about half of the 3.6 billion passenger trips by air globally in 2016.Nowhere is the battle of the alliances more hard fought than in Europe between one of Oneworld’s founding members, British Airways, and Star Alliance mega-carrier Lufthansa.Though their frequent flyer programs are dwarfed by the 100 million members who belong to Oneworld giant American Airlines’ AAdvantage after the merger with US Airways, they’re still among the biggest in the world outside of America. In 2014, it was claimed that Lufthansa’s loyalty program, Miles & More, had 25 million members, but Lufthansa Manager of Program Marketing, Bastian Neumann-Semerow, told Miles & More now has 10 million active members. (“We don’t talk about our members in total,” he says.)That’s considerably more than the seven million members claimed by British Airways’ loyalty program Executive Club – headquartered at London Heathrow airport, just 650 kilometres (less than an hour’ flying) from Lufthansa’s fortress, Frankfurt Main airport – though fewer than the 11.4 million frequent flyer members, for example, at Oneworldcarrier Qantas’s Qantas Frequent Flyer, which has extensive retail inter-relationships.Most of the world’s frequent-flyer program have been overhauled in the past five years to give more benefits to travellers according to the amount they spend rather than the volume of miles or kilometres they fly. That has led to a backlash from once-a-year travellers whose points buying power has been reduced. But airlines like British Airways have been listening to their Executive Club members – in particular, to the long-standing, widespread gripe among frequent travellers everywhere that award seats in the past have been too hard to obtain.“Reward seats are extremely popular with customers and we guarantee that at least nine million reward seats are offered across BA operated flights every year,” a BA spokesman told“Some of the changes we have made to our loyalty program include guaranteeing a minimum number of seats available on every flight  (and) ensuring that customers who have paid more for their ticket … collect more Avios (points).”Customers flying on the cheapest economy class tickets now collect 25 per cent Avios per mile flown; customers on mid-range economy class tickets collect 50 per cent Avios per mile flown; and customers on flexible economy class tickets receive one Avios per mile flown. For Club World business class/Club Europe business class and First, the spokesman says, Avios earned now either stay the same or increase by up to 300 per cent, depending on the cabin and type of ticket purchased, the BA spokesman says.Introducing off-peak pricing means that for two thirds of the year, customers need fewer Avios for their reward flights. On average, a customer would need 26 per cent fewer Avios for an off-peak booking in economy. “The key to frequent flyer programs is ensuring that benefits are easily accessible to members,” the spokesman says. “In recent years we have seen a change in how loyalty schemes are run. We’ve made changes to provide more opportunities for members to spend Avios on reward flights as well as to ensure that the Executive Club continues to deliver a competitive and rewarding loyalty program for the future.”Like other airlines loyalty plans, Lufthansa’s Bastian Neumann-Semerow says Miles & More is no longer just a frequent-flyer program but a multi-partner program that can deliver many benefits beyond flight redemptions.“We are continuously working on further improving the attractiveness of Miles & More for our sophisticated members,” he says.In the past two years, he says, Miles & More has added new partners in the premium segment and continually expanded premium offers for earning and redeeming award miles “in all key areas of life”.Crucially, the program has reduced surcharge prices for award flights within Europe operated by Lufthansa and its subsidiaries, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and SWISS.In addition, a new option, “Cash and Miles”, allows members to pay for any flight booked with a Lufthansa Group airline at using miles, either wholly or in part. Neumann-Semerow says Miles & More is adding new members every day.“Miles & More is the expert in successful customer retention,” he says. “Due to its easy handling, the attractive incentives for earning and redeeming award miles and its award flights there are Miles & More members all over the world.” Indeed, the geographical spread of Miles & More members is impressive: while a third live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and the next most popular catchment is the rest of Europe, Americans are the third-largest group and Asians the fourth largest. “Customer retention is important and will be as important in the future,” Neumann-Semerow says. “It will always be essential to provide relevant and attractive offerings. Miles & More is working continuously to achieve these objectives. We have our eye on our members’ needs.”last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest We had a few problems with test weight but it has only been a few guys. Wheat has been averaging around 60 bushels and mostly the test weight has been good. There was quite a bit of straw out there. We didn’t want the rain before, but now we need it. We are getting pretty dry. Last week some places got an inch to an inch and a half and we had some places that didn’t get any. There is a chance of rain tomorrow and another chance this weekend so hopefully we get some out of that. About two weeks ago it switched over to a dry pattern, right before it got really hot and humid. The shorter corn on top of the hills is starting to roll a little. The early-planted corn has not really been affected yet. I think it has a better root system on it.We are done with the first cutting of hay but we have a little bit of custom work to do. Some guys are done with second cutting if they have alfalfa out, but the guys with a lot of grass hay out will probably finish up their first cutting this week. I’ve baled first cutting before at the end of August. There are some bare spots in the corn fields where it just didn’t come up from the wet weather. One neighbor has some corn ready to tassel and then some that is knee high too. I feel like corn chopping season is going to be a long one this year because they will have the early corn to get off and then they’ll have to wait a while for the rest of it. There are some beans above knee high and starting to canopy and there are some beans three or four inches tall. There are some guys still putting their first bean crop in this week.We are getting the cover crop seeded into the corn right now. We go through with a three-point spreader on the back of the tractor. The last of the corn is still short enough that we can get over it with that. If we can’t inter-seed the corn we will just take the corn off a little wetter and seed rye in the fall.Today it is getting close to 90 and then it is supposed to cool back off a little bit in the middle of the week.last_img read more

FTC Warns Window Makers on Exaggerated Energy Claims

first_imgEarly this year, five window makers agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that the firms had made deceptive claims about the energy efficiency and energy cost savings that their windows could deliver. But that was just one step in the agency’s quest to address deceptive marketing in this building-component category.Indeed, the FTC, in keeping with customary practice, has been using the agreement to prod other window marketers to conform to its terms, which prohibit unsubstantiated claims that installing replacement windows can yield energy savings. Over the past few weeks, in fact, the agency sent letters to 14 window manufacturers and one window-glass maker (Cardinal Glass) that remind the companies of the settlement terms, cite instances in which the companies had been making unsupported energy-saving claims, and summarize guidelines that can help the companies avoid unsupported or misleading claims.Basically, the FTC – which said in its letters to the 15 companies that it “hasn’t decided that your claims violate the law” – wants the firms to review their marketing material and refrain from making performance claims that are unsubstantiated by scientific analysis.Points of contention“The warning letters highlight claims that consumers will save more than 30% on their energy or heating and cooling bills by installing replacement windows,” the agency said in a press release. “The letters state that the FTC has made no determination whether the companies are violating the law” but urges the recipients to be mindful of the following:1. Energy-savings claims must be backed by scientific evidence.2. Be specific about the type of savings consumers can expect.3. Avoid deception when making “up to” claims.4. Avoid deception when selecting home characteristics for modeling.5. Clearly and prominently disclose any assumptions.6. Exercise care in using testimonials or “case studies.”7. Manufacturers may be liable for misleading or unsubstantiated claims made to dealers or retailers, in addition to claims made directly to consumers.Adjusting the pitchWhile framing customer testimonials in ways that bring them into compliance can be tricky, finding credible evidence to back up a company’s claims about energy savings (assuming they’re true) isn’t necessarily difficult. In its letter to one of the companies – Newpro, based in Medford, Massachusetts – the FTC noted “your home page states ‘Home Energy Savings 40%’ above the sentence, ‘According to the Department of Energy, NEWPRO Windows can REDUCE HEAT LOSS up to 40%,’ and a ‘neighborhood testimonial’ on your home page states, ‘We have saved at least 40% on our home heating fuel, if not more.’”According to energy expert Michael Blasnik, a data-cruncher who has collaborated with utility researchers to analyze the energy bills of tens of thousands of homeowners around the country, “The amount of energy saved by replacing all of the windows in a home is generally on the order of 1% to 4% of the heating energy usage.”The last time we checked, the energy-saving claim and the testimonial on Newpro’s home page are still in place, although the claim links to a Newpro “Home Energy Savings” landing page whose lead-in text is a little more specific: “NEWPRO Windows Can Save You MONEY! According to the Department of Energy, R-5 windows (windows with a U-Value of .20 or less) may reduce average heat loss through windows by 30 – 40%*.”The landing page also includes a link to a DOE fact sheet, dated March 2010, for the high-efficiency windows component of the agency’s Building Technologies Program, titled “Highly Insulating (R-5) Windows and Low-E Storm Windows Volume Purchase Program.” The document starts with a definition: “What are Highly Insulating R-5 Windows? Highly insulating windows with a whole-window R-value of 5 (a U-factor of around 0.2) are the top tier of energy efficient windows for cold and mixed climates available today. This compares to ENERGY STAR windows with an R value of 3. Increasing the R value from 3 to 5 reduces average heat loss through the window by 30% to 40%.”An ongoing processThe companies named in the settlement agreement earlier this year are Gorell Enterprises; Long Fence & Home; Serious Energy; THV Holdings; and Winchester Industries. In addition to Newpro, the FTC sent letters to Cardinal Glass; Acadia Windows & Doors; Nationwide Window & Siding; Pace Window & Door; Pal Windows; Ringer Windows; Sierra Pacific Windows; SureGuard Windows; SwissShade & Security; Thompson Creek Window Company; Value Windows & Doors; Vytex Windows; Weather Shield; and West Window Corp. The FTC adds that its coverage of energy efficiency claims in this category is part of an initiative the agency launched more than 20 years ago to ensure that environmental marketing is truthful. The FTC hosts a Web page, headlined “Environmentally Friendly Products: FTC’s Green Guides,” that includes links to both general and specific green-product marketing guidelines and enforcement actions.Whether all 15 companies that received letters details will comply with the FTC’s marketing guidelines remains to be seen. In any case, the agency’s commissioners voted unanimously to make public all warning letters, and it’s apparent the agency has no intention of letting the terms of the settlement fade from memory. Here are links to some of the warning letters sent out by the FTC:Warning letter sent to Cardinal GlassWarning letter sent to NewproWarning letter sent to Weather Shield Windowslast_img read more

Argentina vs Venezuela: Messi magic set to unfold in Kolkata

first_imgIt might be just an international friendly, but both Argentina and Venezuela mean serious business going into Friday’s encounter at the Yuba Bharati Kriranagan in Kolkata. While Argentina would want to give Alejandro Sabella a winning start to his coaching campaign, Venezuela would once again want to prove to the world that their feat at the recently concluded Copa America was no fluke but a result of sheer hard work.Lionel Messi’s first match as captain would only raise the level of expectations from the player often considered only half as effective in his national colours compared to what he does while playing for Barcelona. The fact that these two teams meet on October 11 in a World Cup qualifier match only raises the significance of Friday’s game.As stated time and again by Sabella, Argentine fans want nothing but a win every time the national team takes the field and the level of expectation would be huge going into the much publicised as friendly. If the pressure from staunch supporters back home wasn’t enough, they will have the majority of the football fanatics present here gunning for them. After all, the city follows only two national teams in the world. One is Brazil and the other Argentina.Having made the bold decision to leave out striker Carlos Tevez on grounds of lack of match fitness, Sabella will be banking on the likes of Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain.Sabella will most likely hold Messi back in the role of an attacking midfielder as he excels in the role of a playmaker.advertisementVenezuela coach Cesar Farias feels the team is doing really well and they were looking to finally make it to the coveted World Cup. Venezuela will bank on their talismanic captain Juan Arango. The 31-year-old midfielder is their most capped player. Getafe’s Nicolas Fedor and Salomon Rondon will also keep the Argentine backline on their toes. For Venezuela, it’s a win-win situation as they have nothing to lose. Not only are they the underdogs, but even the vociferous crowd would be supporting the Argentines. But one thing is for sure, considering the recent form shown by the side, Argentina wouldn’t dare to be complacent.Shops make a killingEveryone seems to be enjoying the Messi mania in Kolkata. If the roadside walls and billboards aren’t enough indication that Argentina is in town, a look at the BC Roy market – the biggest sports goods market – confirms that the football crazy city has gone berserk. The moment one enters the market, blue is all one can see. Not just Lionel Messi jerseys even Argentina flags and bandanas are selling like hot cakes.Shankar Agarwal, owner of Agarwal sports, feels Messi’s visit is a blessing in disguise for the sports shops as “prior to Durga Puja seldom one buys sports stuff but this time it’s different.”last_img read more
