Danish appeals board rules market-rate switch not necessary

first_imgHowever, this was refused by the Danish FSA, it said, adding that the supervisory board did not agree with this and referred it to the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs’ Commercial Appeals Board (Erhvervsankenævnet).“Now, the Commercial Appeals Board has made its decision, and it does not advocate a collective transition to market interest rates,” AP said.Cecilie Therese Hansen, chair of AP’s supervisory board said: ”The decision was primarily based on the fact that although the transition is sensible and will entail a number of benefits for the members, the FSA and the Commercial Appeals Board did not believe that the transition was necessary in relation to the members’ interests.”AP said that since the ruling was largely based on the necessity of the change, it did not alter the assessment that a transition to market rates would create added value for scheme members. The fund said the supervisory board would decide at its next meeting in August whether the case should be appealed, and how a market-rate pension scheme should be offered on the basis of individual choice.“If necessary, a decision on offering members the option to make an individual choice to change will be taken at an extraordinary general meeting which is expected to take place by the end of 2020,” AP said.AP and PJD have now both decided at their 2020 annual general meetings to offer all new members a market-rate scheme, with PJD having done so on Monday, following AP’s member vote at the end of May.Hansen said all members had the same level of risk under the current average rate product, resulting in that level being too low for younger members and too high for older people.“The new product applies market-rate principles, with all members achieving a more appropriate investment profile,” she said, adding that the product AP planned to use also offered the option of individually adjusting the investment profile. In recent years, many Danish pension providers have moved away from traditional average-rate or with-profit pension products – with or without yield guarantees – in favour of market-rate or unit-link products which are less onerous in terms of solvency requirements.Looking for IPE’s latest magazine? Read the digital edition here. Two Danish pension funds have lost the latest round in their fight to switch all members to market-rate pensions from the traditional average-rate product without first getting individual consent. The Danish Commercial Appeals Board (Erhvervsankenævnet) has ruled against AP (Arkitekternes Pensionskasse), the pension fund for architects, and PJD (Pensionskassen for Jordbrugsakademikere & Dyrlæger), the pension fund for agricultural academics and vets, making such a change based solely on an overall member vote – backing the Danish FSA’s earlier decision. Both pension funds, which are run by labour-market pensions firm Sampension, announced the defeat on their websites.AP wrote: “The work to transition to a new and modern market-rate product for pension fund members has been ongoing for a few years, and the board would like to have offered a collective choice to change last year.”last_img read more

Last bid to avert McIlroy action

first_img The golfer, who took up the game as a youngster in Holywood, Co Down, and now has a home in Florida, claims the terms were inferior to those given to other top-10 players including fellow countryman and major-winning friend Graeme McDowell, who was in the same stable. In court papers when the case was launched in late 2013, it was claimed McIlroy signed up with Ridge’s agency at an informal meeting on the day of Horizon’s Christmas party in 2011. The golfer, whose address at the time was given as Avenue Princess Grace in Monaco, alleged he was exploited, misled and taken advantage of when he joined the Dublin agency. The court heard he had no legal advice or knowledge of negotiating before he signed up, and trusted them to charge the appropriate rates. The dispute involves McIlroy’s claim that Horizon charged almost four times what top ten golfers pay to agents. The pre-tax rates were set at 5 per cent of prize winnings and 20 per cent of sponsorship and appearances money, a charge his lawyers claim is reserved for an ”inexperienced or unproven golfer”, the court heard last year. McIlroy’s business interests are now overseen by Rory McIlroy Incorporated, which is headed by Donal Casey, formerly of Horizon, his father Gerry and Funston. World number one Rory McIlroy is to continue negotiations with his former agent in an attempt to avert a potentially long and bitter courtroom showdown over a multi-million pound contract dispute. The High Court in Dublin heard progress was being made in discussions which took place over five hours at the Four Courts complex. The four-time major winner, fresh from a weekend victory in Dubai, is suing Conor Ridge’s Horizon Sports Management over the cut his firm was taking from his on and off course earnings. Press Association A year and four months since the Northern Irishman challenged his ex-manager over the fees he was charging, negotiations were set to continue tonight before lawyers return to court at 11am on Wednesday. The 25-year-old had sued Ridge in a row over £4.2million in fees. But the divisive courtroom battle was expected to have involved arguments over tens of millions in lost commissions and earnings from wins on the course and massive sponsorship deals. The case had been expected to last eight weeks. At a packed court number one in the Four Courts in Dublin, Judge Brian Cregan agreed to allow further last-ditch talks between the McIlroy camp and Ridge’s advisers. The court had heard in the morning that the two sides wanted time to negotiate and ”narrow the issues”. After the first two hours of talks, the judge was told that progress had been made and at 4pm he agreed to give both sides another night to work on the issues. McIlroy was in court, supported by business executive Barry Funston, who oversees the golfer’s charitable work through the Rory McIlroy Foundation, and his cousin Brian McIlroy. Ridge was also in court. The case centres on McIlroy’s contract with Dublin-based Horizon and two other linked companies, the Malta-based Gurteen and Canovan Management, also based in the Irish capital. last_img read more

Black tie dinner for National Sports Awards ceremony in April

first_img… New category for companiesTHE National Sports Awards ceremony is set for April 21 and will be hosted as a black tie dinner for the nominees at the Savannah Suite, Pegasus Hotel.According to Director of Sport Christopher Jones, the hosting of last year’s ceremony in a ‘Grammy-style’ format did not garner the kind of attendance that was hoped for, so now the ceremony will take the form of a dinner.“It was with the hope that we would have had a larger participation, but I didn’t see the result we were looking for.“So the sports award this year will take the format of a sports award and dinner. All the sports awardees who would have been nominated would be invited to a dinner at a whole black-tie affair,” Jones explained.Following deliberations, the varying sporting associations and federations are expected to be contacted by this month to begin submitting their nominations. In other changes, the awards list is also expected to see the addition of an award for companies that are ardent supporters of sports; as a means of letting the companies know that their work is greatly appreciated by the government.“We will be adding companies, companies that would have been supportive to sports throughout the year. That is a category that we would want to insert,” Jones said.Jones has been advocating for some time now the idea of rewarding businesses that invest in sports, even going as far as to ponder the idea of engaging the Ministry of Finance in discussions of tangibly giving back to the companies.“The National Sports Commission (NSC) will have a conversation with the Ministry of Finance so we can say that these corporate companies have been investing heavily in sports, and we would want them to see the reciprocity of their spending; so that tax exemption, tax breaks, tax waivers could be had for those companies as an impetus to encourage them to continue to invest in sports development.“We’re hopeful that in 2017 those discussions can go further so that we at some stage can make a pronouncement that this is the position,” Jones had declared earlier last month. On the question of perhaps even tangible awards for the sportspersons who win their nominations, Jones affirmed that there’s nothing being considered at the moment. However, it is something that could be considered, more so if any company would like to sponsor any part of it.“That is important, that is something I fully endorse but I think over time we could see expense. If by chance a corporate company would want to come on board and provide a cash incentive, I would welcome that. But from the department itself we wouldn’t include that as an incentive,” Jones stated. With the current system, awardees are usually only bestowed a trophy, and the honour of being able to say they won their nomination. Additionally, however, last year’s winners were treated to a trip to the Kaieteur Falls. The National Sports Awards is an annual ceremony where athletes and other sportspersons are honoured for their involvement in sports in Guyana. The nominations are submitted by the associations and then the winners are selected by a panel of judges, who decide based on their performance during the preceding year. While in previous years the awardees would be announced prior to the night of the ceremony, last year the awardees were not announced until the night of the ceremony.Motor racer, Kristian Jeffrey and the multi-talented Alisha Fortune are the reigning Sportsman- and Sportswoman-of-the-Year respectively, while table tennis player Chelsea Edghill is the Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year and badminton’s Narayan Ramdhani is the Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year.last_img read more

‘It’s total devastation. Everything is a mess’

first_imgA Donegal woman whose home was devastated by Storm Lorenzo floods says she can’t bear to think about what tomorrow will bring.Sheena Culloo at Clarendon Drive in Donegal Town had a panicked awakening at 6am on Friday morning when floodwaters rushed into her home.“The water was coming in fast, back and front,” she said. “It reached up to two inches by the time it stopped.” As fire services came to assist locals, the rush was on for Sheena to move her furniture upstairs and save pieces from irreparable damage.Sheena’s son (21) who has cerebral palsy, has an adapted bedroom and wetroom downstairs. As the floods came in, Sheena had to bring his bedding, furniture and computer upstairs also.“My son asked his friends to help and they landed in force. They did a great job and only for them and the amount of helping hands we had we were able to get the important things moved,” Sheena said.“It’s total devastation. Everything is a mess,” she said. Sheena Culloo outside her Clarendon Drive home in Donegal town. (North West Newspix)This is not the first time that homes at Clarendon Row were flooded. Three years ago this area, which lies beside the River Eske, was flooded and hit on several occasions since.“It’s so disheartening to see everything in your house touched by water,” Sheena said.“It’s very hard to think about tomorrow or the next day. When the tide returns tonight or another storm comes what are we going to do?“We have young families, pensioners and people living on their own here.”Sheena said that her house has not been affected as badly this morning as it has on other years. But since the first floods, she has been unable to get insurance. “All the damage will have to come out of our own pockets,” she said. The water had subsided by midday Friday, but Sheena said that the worry will be constant for any future storms this winter.“The water is away but the river is still flooded and the tide is high. It’s not a nice feeling wondering will it happen again.”The Government has issued a notice to the public that the Urgent Needs Payments may be available to help with the immediate costs of assistance after an emergency such as flooding. Berkman Plans Digital Public Library of America

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… “We’re grateful to Berkman for coordinating this historic effort to create a Digital Public Library of America and to fulfill the vision of an open, distributed network of comprehensive online resources that draws on the nation’s living heritage to educate, inform and empower everyone in this and future generations.”The Berkman Center is well known for its research into online topics, including filtering and aspects of online tyranny. The project’s Steering Committee is made up of library and foundation leaders. They plan to announced the schedule early next year, which promises to announce a full slate of activities in early 2011. Among their tasks will be to gather a group of partners that will include public and research library reps, cultural organizations, members of government and industry and authors and publishers. The first meeting will be led by the official United States Archivist, David Ferriero. It will be followed by a host of meetings and workshops over the next year. The steering committee includes Berkman co-director John Palfrey; Charles Henry, President of the Council on Library and Information Resources; Stanford University’s Ida M. Green University Librarian and Director of Academic Information Resources Michael Keller; and Deanna Marcum, Associate Librarian for Library Services at the Library of Congress. With the Internet and e-readers, the question might arise “Why do we even need a digital public library?” David Rothman, founder of TeleRead and long-time proponent of such a project, makes the case ably in a November essay in The Atlantic. “Knowledge is the common property of mankind.” Thomas Jefferson curt hopkins Harvard Law‘s Berkman Center for Internet and Society has announced a “research and planning initiative” to construct and open a so-called digital public library. With the backing of an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant, Berkman will bring together a large group to help “define the scope, architecture, costs and administration” of an online library of unusual scope. Doron Weber, Vice President of the Sloan Foundation sketched the scope of the project. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Related Posts center_img Tags:#E-Books#E-Learning#web Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting “(T)here is one thing I currently cannot do with my Kindle despite all the sizzle in the commercials–read public library books.
