CARICOM leaders hold wide-ranging discussions with US Vice President

first_imgVice President of the United States, Mike Pence, says the United States remains interested in the Caribbean and Latin America.Pence made the disclosure as he met with leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), on Saturday –  the final day of the Summit of the Americas held in Lima, Peru.According to Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, following the Summit, the Caribbean leaders “took advantage” of the opportunity to dialogue with the US official. “It was a good opportunity to at least exchange ideas at practically the highest level in the United States,” Greenidge said. During the meeting, the CARICOM heads of state and delegations also had discussions with other US officials including the new head of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).Wide-ranging discussion“It was a wide-ranging discussion. The Caribbean raised many of the problems they would have raised before but also looked at an on-going framework of cooperation with the US and setting a scene for the types of discussions that may arise”, Greenidge explained. The discussions, in relation to the Guyanese concerns, were along the line of migration and crime and security. “We share, of course, some of the other things the Caribbean would normally have,” Minister Greenidge added. These include resilience, the problem of de-risking and the disappearance of correspondent banking. The regional leaders also raised the concerns over the rigid formulation and enforcement of rules without reference to the so called collateral damage that they may pose, especially on small island nations. The ‘third border’ of the USThe Caribbean region is considered the “third border” for the United States. The US State Department notes that the US’s Caribbean 2020 multi-year strategy seeks to engage the Caribbean region “in the areas of security, diplomacy, prosperity, energy, education, and health.” This will be coordinated by the State Department and USAID.Following the meeting with Vice President Pence, the CARICOM leaders were also engaged by several members of the US Congress. The CARICOM heads of state and delegations were participating in the eight Summit of the Americas hosted by the Organization of the American States under the theme “Democratic Governance against Corruption”.World leaders from the Caribbean, Latin America, the US and Canada adopted the Lima Commitment in line with the theme and have pledged to do more to eradicate corruption in public officers.last_img read more

T&T High court rules in favor of LGBT community

first_imgThe Trinidad and Tobago High Court on Thursday has ruled it unconstitutional to impede on the rights of homosexual men and anal sex.The challenge against the state was brought by gay rights activist Jason Jones in 2017.Final ruling in three monthsHowever, a final ruling will be handed down in three months.Following the court’s decision members of the LGBT Community, celebrated on the outskirts of the building. The court matter was brought to repeal sections 13 and 16 of the Sexual Offenses Act which criminalizes buggery and serious indecency even between consenting adults.Jones claimed that the long-standing legislation contravenes his constitutional rights to privacy and freedom of thought and expression in addition to being in direct contradiction to this country’s international human rights obligations.Stunning victory“It was a stunning victory for human rights and for all Trinidad and Tobago citizens …I think we must all come together now after this judgement and embrace each other in true love and respect and honor for each citizen. This is not about LGBT, it is about the rights and freedoms that are enshrined in our constitution and I hope that everybody will come away with this calmly and collectively, looking at what the future should be for our nation. “We have to now start to pull together and I think today is a starting moment for us to do that,” said Jones, following the ruling.Disowned by familyWhen the ruling was filed last year, Jones told reporters that he decided to file the lawsuit due to his personal experience as a homosexual in Trinidad and Tobago including him being disowned by his family forcing him to migrate to the United Kingdom.“I don’t wish to shove a gay agenda down you (the public) throat or attack your morals, religion or spirituality, I am doing this for the betterment of our nation, and for our feature generations,” he then said. The lawsuit is one of several landmark cases filed by Caribbean LGBT activists challenging regional homophobic laws.In 2016, Jamaican lawyer Maurice Tomlinson challenged the immigration laws in Trinidad and Tobago and Belize which allow for refusal of entry to regional homosexual visitors. While the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) dismissed his case, both Governments admitted that the laws were not enforced by their immigration officials.Later that year, Belize’s Supreme Court struck down that country’s sodomy laws, after a case similar to Jones’ was filed by a local activist. However, unlike Trinidad and Tobago Belize did not have a saving clause protecting its legislation from review.last_img read more

Montserrat’s Premier Romeo leads tribute to fallen icon Dr. George Irish

first_imgBRADES, Montserrat, CMC –Premier Donaldson Romeo Wednesday led Montserrat in mourning the death of national icon, Dr. George Irish, who died at the age of 76 years late Tuesday.“I, like most Montserratians, am saddened at the passing of  the Right Honorable, Dr. James Alfred George Irish, OE, son of the soil and National Icon. Whether known to some as educator, social activist, trade unionist, politician, musician, artist, singer, orator, or Man of God, in each and every aspect he has left an indelible mark on us individually and collectively,” Romeo said. “As we mourn his loss may we hold on to and be comforted by our God, who Dr Irish himself chose to love, serve and represent as a Pastor and Man of God,” he added.Irish was the first recipient of the Ph.D. degree in Spanish from the University of the West Indies (UWI).He also taught at the university as well as at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) in the Dominican Republic, and in the United States at the City University of New York (CUNY) where he served as Professor of Caribbean and Latin American Studies. In a poem, Sir Howard Fergus, who co-wrote the Montserrat National Anthem with Irish, said “in this sickly season when the smell of death pervades the atmosphere, the passing of Professor Irish creates a sad and gaping hole deeper than six feet”.“George has left us and has left much. At a time when “icon” is liberally distributed as klim in our impoverished childhood, it seems beggarly to so endow him, I dub him a Montserrat avatar which carries spiritual overtones, in honour of his enormous gifting which he generously invested in his island home, attracting meagre appreciation; his legacy is wide and long,” Sir Howard, who served as acting Governor of this British Overseas Territory, wrote in a poem.Irish was also the founder of the Montserrat Allied Workers’ Union and the Montserrat Cooperative Credit Union. He was also the author of more than 25 books. For his great body of work he was awarded the Nicolas Guillen Medallion for scholarly work in Caribbean and Latin American literature. He had a brief foray in politics unsuccessfully contesting the 1983 general election for a seat in the legislative council.last_img read more

A Swedish market survey by the Mediavision consultancy, found that 61 percent of all new online gambling accounts set up over the past year were with internationally licensed operators. “From an affiliate’s point of view, this means that referring Swedish players to online casinos should not be difficult, as long as the affiliate website has traffic. “I believe that in a couple of years internationally licensed online operators will be allowed to apply for Swedish licenses. I am very excited about Kasino Curt.”Helenius can’t promote the website in his homeland of Finland, where gaming is directed by the Lotteries Act, and three organisations, Veikkaus, RAY and Fintoto, hold exclusive rights to gambling operations. In Sweden it is believed that plans to overhaul its online gambling market are to be pressed ahead with, ending the monopoly of state owned Svenka Spel and allowing international operators to apply for local licenses.Should this go ahead, however, it’s thought it won’t come into force until after the country holds its next general election in September 2018. Playtech’s strategy also includes several other third-party agreements, such as Captain Up’s gamification engine and other partnerships that are soon to be announced.Featurespace’s adaptive, real-time, individual change platform (ARIC) understands each player’s individual behaviour and automatically evaluates risk.By monitoring player behaviour, the ARIC platform instantly identifies new fraudulent attacks. At the same time, ARIC reduces the number of genuine, incorrectly sanctioned customers – significantly reducing poor player experience. This partnership further underlines Playtech’s commitment to helping customers manage risk and to providing best-of-breed gaming products to its customers.Once a licensee has set up Featurespace as a third-party provider within IMS, the occurrence of a set of pre-configured player events, such as deposits, withdrawals, and changes to personal information, begins triggering alerts for IMS to send information to the ARIC platform. To maximise the effectiveness of ARIC’s evaluation, licensees will be required to send historical data to Featurespace prior to its real-time investigations.Shimon Akad, COO, Playtech, commented: “Playtech is committed to promoting safe play and empowering licensees and players with advanced customer engagement and protection.“We are developing industry-leading risk management technology and processes and Playtech’s IMS player management platform provides our licensees with the latest player protection protocols.
